2023-2024 Graziadio Academic Catalog [ARCHIVED CATALOG]

Joint Bachelor of Science in Management and Master of Business Administration

Graduates of the Graziadio School Bachelor of Science in Management (BSM) program who have achieved distinction in their BSM coursework have the opportunity to pursue the Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree in an expedited fashion through the MBAJ Program. Based on their mastery* of related course content and outstanding overall performance in the BSM Program, the MBAJ Program may be completed in as few as 30 units (as compared to 52 units required for the standard MBA). Although MBAJ students are afforded the same concentration options as those available to their peers in the traditional MBA Program, they must complete 4 - 8 units of designated preparatory coursework (i.e., 1 to 2 courses) in the first trimester of the MBAJ Program, prior to continuing onto concentration electives. These specific requirements are delineated for each concentration in the “MBAJ Concentration” section of the catalog.

The MBAJ program focuses on the following areas of student learning: expanding students’ knowledge base in business through areas of leadership, global business, finance, entrepreneurship, dispute resolution, marketing, and general business. In addition, continuing to build critical thinking skills; applying theories into practice; continuing improvement in oral and written communication skills for persuasive and professional articulatulation. Also, to further enhance students’ effectiveness as values-centered managers and leaders of teams in the local and global environment.

For purposes of the MBAJ Program, content mastery is demonstrated by having earned grades of “B” or better in each BSM course to be applied toward waiving the corresponding content at the MBA level (e.g., ACCT 472  for ACCT 652  ). Students not having achieved the minimum “B” grade in the applicable BSM coursework will be required to complete the equivalent MBA-level course in addition to the standard MBAJ course/unit requirements. Depending on the selected concentration, the MBAJ curriculum includes 16-24 units of elective coursework, intended to provide deeper knowledge within a chosen area of emphasis and to facilitate broader exploration of topics germane to the contemporary business environment.

Students enrolled in a program that is billed per-unit tuition may not enroll in courses that do not meet or exceed the degree completion requirements as outlined in the catalog.

Global Business Intensive Courses

Two units of credit may be earned by attending one of the Global Business Intensive courses offered at locations in Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean, and North America. These are short-term intensive courses which students take during trimester breaks.

Study Abroad Program

Students may spend a trimester abroad as a full-time student at one of the Graziadio School international partner business schools. Upon approval by the appropriate academic discipline(s), up to 12 units of course work of comparable scope and content may be taken at the international partner school to satisfy elective requirements. Students will enroll at the Graziadio School in the appropriate number of PGBS Study Abroad course units. When the courses are completed at the international partner university, their course designation will be added to the enrollment record so that they will appear on the student’s transcript. These courses will be graded credit or no credit only.

MBAJ Course Load

As the MBAJ Program is designed for working professionals, students are typically limited to 10 units of coursework per trimester. This limit pertains to students in good standing; additional unit restrictions may apply to students as outlined in an academic succes plan based on the Standards of Achievement for PGBS students.

Global Business Requirement

All MBAJ students must complete at least 2 units of global business course work by satisfying one of the following options:

  1. A one-week, 2-unit Global Business Intensive course hosted by partner schools abroad, led by a Graziadio School faculty member.
  2. One trimester Study Abroad at a global partner business school.
  3. Summer school opportunities at a global partner business school.
  4. A one-week, 2-unit residential Global Business Intensive course hosted at Pepperdine University taught by a visiting professor from a global partner business school.
  5. A 2-unit Going Global with Graziadio (G3) project.
  6. An appropriately scoped Global Business Directed Instruction project.

Access to Online Courses

On-ground students may, upon approval, complete up to one-third of their program unit requirements through the online course modality. Those who wish to enroll in an online course may submit a request for consideration on a space-available basis. Prior to the formal submission of the request, students should consult with their advisor to understand the potential impact of taking the desired on-ground course on their overall program completion plan and timeline. Requests are individually reviewed by the Program Office, and approval is not guaranteed.

Change in Program Modality

Students are generally expected to complete their program coursework in the same modality they had chosen upon program entrance. Under compelling and verifiable circumstances, a student may formally petition for a permanent change in program modality (i.e., from online to on-ground). Petitions should be directed to the Program Office, detailing the nature of the circumstances and providing relevant documentation.

Required Courses

A minimum of 30 units of MBA-level coursework are required for the completion of the MBAJ, five (5) of which must be satisfied by experiential learning modules and an integrative capstone course: PGBS 670J Integration in Business Operations (1) STGY 659 Strategic Management (4) . PGBS 670J  must be taken within the first two trimesters of the MBAJ curriculum and prior to STGY 659 . The remaining 25 units are to be fulfilled through a combination of designated foundational MBA courses pertaining to students’ chosen area of concentration, the actual concentration electives, and additional elective courses from areas outside one’s chosen concentration. The MBAJ Program may be completed in as few as three trimesters, based on an average course load of 10 units per trimester and course availability. This timeline will be extended for students who may need to take additional units beyond the minimum 30 units.

Notes:

* The additional elective units, beyond those completed to satisfy the concentration requirement, should be distributed across multiple content areas, with no more than 8 units taken from a single area.

Concentrations

The Joint BSM/MBA program allows students to selection from the following concentrations. A concentration consists of 12 units of course work.

*The concentration is on pause and not available to new, incoming students.

Elective course availability will vary per term and year based on instructor availability, enrollment, and program needs. Although elective courses are not guaranteed to be scheduled on a regular cycle, students will be provided a choice of relevant options from the program’s elective list during course registration.
