Master of Science in Applied Finance (MSAF)


This program is completed in three consecutive trimesters and consists of 38-39 units (with an optional fourth trimester). The degree is designed to prepare students for entry-level positions in financial services. Students enrolled in the Graziadio School’s MBA programs are not eligible to apply. Students in the MSAF program have the opportunity to select one of two tracks: Financial Management  or Investments .

Students who complete the MSAF degree can apply to be admitted for the Full-Time MBA degree. MSAF graduates who are admitted to the Full-Time MBA program will be required to complete an abbreviated curriculum requiring 39 units. Students may waive the following courses from the FTMBA program: BSCI 650 , which is required in both programs, as well as ACCT 620 , DESC 618 , ECNM 624 , and FINC 629 . If applicable to the declared concentration, an additional 3 units of MSAF coursework may be counted towards the FTMBA concentration requirements. All other courses and requirements in the FTMBA program must be completed, including internship and electives in order to earn a minimum of 39 units in the FTMBA program.

MSAF Program


The Master of Science in Applied Finance requires 38-39 units of course work and is offered in three tracks.

Investments Track


This track emphasizes skills in such in-demand expertise as business valuation, equity analysis, and investment banking. It provides knowledge to prepare you for the Chartered Financial Analyst exam.

The curriculum for the MSAF Investments track consists of the following:

Core Courses 35 units  
Career Seminar 0 units  
Elective Courses 4 units  
Internship Practicum 0 units  
Total Units 39 units  

Program Sequence


Optional Trimester


In the optional trimester, students may enroll in a practicum course in order to apply their learning and gain additional experience prior to graduation. If a student decides to add this optional trimester, the program length will be a total of four trimesters.

Please note the following Practicum Requirements:

  1. Students must submit a petition to their Academic Advisor for consideration
  2. A minimum 3.0 GPA is required to participate
  3. The Practicum must be 14 weeks in length and full time work
  • Internship must be done in the third term of study, with the fourth term requiring full time coursework.
  • or

  • Field Project must be done in the third term of study, with the fourth term requiring full time coursework. Requires a topic and a faculty supervisor; additional per-unit tuition may be required for these options.
  • or

  • Applied Research must be done in the third term of study, with the fourth term requiring full time coursework. Requires a topic and a faculty supervisor; additional per-unit tuition may be required for these options.
  • or

  • The Study Abroad option is 16 units and therefore requires an additional full term of tuition.

Notes:


  1. Students must complete career development requirements before registering for the final trimester of study.
  2. Electives limited to ACCT, DESC, ECNM, or FINC or prefix courses.
